Basil Oil Origin and Extraction

Basil Oil is derived from the herb basil, also known as St. Joseph’s Wort.  It is made by steam distillation of the leaves and flowering tops. Basil is native to India but is also cultivated in Europe and South East Asia.

Basil Oil Essential Oil Indications/Uses

Basil Oil is used to reduce and treat nausea, motion sickness, indigestion and indigestive disorders including constipation, respiratory challenges and diabetes. It is a good nutritional source of Vitamin A, magnesium, potassium, iron and calcium.  Used topically, basil oil revitalizes skin and hair, and may reduce acne and other skin conditions.

Basil oil also helps to relieve respiratory conditions, such as colds, influenzas, fevers, sinus infections, asthma and whooping cough.  An oil with multiple uses, it assists with stress conditions and mental fatigue, supports eye health, promotes blood circulation, relieves itching caused by insect bites and more.

Basil Oil Contra Indications

Basil Essential Oil is not recommended for pregnant women or for women who are breast feeding. Long term use may increase risk of liver cancer.  Since basil oil may affect blood clotting, its use should be discontinued two weeks prior to a scheduled surgery.

Essential Oils are natural, contracted oils that have the fragrance of the plant from which they originated. Most typically, the oils are extracted from the plant through distillation. In many cases, the distillation process involves the use of steam.  As steam passes through the plant’s stems, seeds, flowers or leaves, it assists in vaporizing the volatile compounds.

While essential oils have various uses, they have a long documented history of medicinal value. Essential Oils can support overall health, act as a treatment or remedy for various medical or psychological conditions or help prevent infections and illness.

Essential Oils should not be used on animals as they can have adverse effects.
