Helichrysum Essential Oil Origin and Extraction

Known botanically as Helichrysum Italicum, this yellow flower is more commonly known as Immortelle or Everlasting. Helichrysum is a yellow flower native to France and Italy, particularly the island of Corsica. The oil is obtained through steam distillation of the flowers. Although this oil is a relatively rare product, it can be stored safely for long periods of time.

Helichrysum Essential Oil Indications/Uses

Helicrysum Essential Oil is perhaps best known for its uses in first aid and trauma, as well as its ability to protect against swelling and scars. However, its uses are not limited to the aforementioned.  Helicrysum Essential Oil promotes health and well-being in a multitude of ways.  This oil is antispasmodic, anticoagulant, antiallergenic, antimicrobial, antihaematoma, antiphlogistic, nervine, antiinflammatory, antitussive, cicatrisant, expectorant, febrifuge, anti septic, cholagogue, emollient, mucolytic, fungicidal, hepatic, diuretic, splenic and cytophylactic.

As an antispasmodic, it prevents or relieves spasms or unwanted contractions. Thus, it provides relief from coughs, cramps, shortness of breath, convulsions and abdominal cramps.

The oil’s anticoagulant properties may help to prevent heart attacks by thinning blood that has been thickened by high cholesterol counts.

The oil’s antiallergenic properties make it an effective combatant to symptoms caused by exposure to an allergen.

Being antihaematoma, Helicrysum Essential Oil stimulates the hormones that dissolve blood clots caused by a haemorrhage.

Antiphlogistic components help to rid the body of inflammation caused by fever, as well as helping to prevent the occurrence and severity of fever.  Because this oil has other febrifuge properties, it may also address the root causes of a fever as well as lowering the fever itself. Since the oil is also anti-inflammatory, it helps remove inflammation caused by other conditions as well as fevers.

Individuals experiencing chronic coughing with or without congestion may experience relief, thanks to Helichrysum Essential Oil’s antitussive qualities and its expectorant qualities. Also, as a mucolytic, this product supports the thinning of thick or hardened mucus, and its subsequent removal from the body.

The nervine qualities protect and strengthen the nervous system, helping to protect against nervous disorders related to aging as well as reducing anxiety and stress levels.

Containing cicatrisant properties, Helichrysum Oil helps wounds to heal quickly, and may prevent or minimize scarring. Its emollient qualities help promote smooth, healthy skin.

The oil’s cholagogue properties encourage good digestion by supporting the discharge of bile and by reducing acids.

Being antiseptic, antimicrobial and anti-fungal, the oil helps protect the body from infections and diseases caused by bacteria, fungi and microbes.

Also a diuretic, Helichrysum Essential Oil supports and encourages urination, thereby aiding in the removal of toxic substances, helping to lower blood pressure, encouraging the loss of fat and improving digestion.

The splenic qualities support a healthy spleen, an organ instrumental in generating new and healthy red blood cells. This oil is a good choice for individuals with anemia.

The oil’s cytohylactic properties indicate that it helps to keep cells healthy as well as stimulating the body to generate new cells.

Having hepatic properties, the oil supports liver health in various ways.

Various conditions and diseases may benefit from the use of Helichryssum Essential Oil.

Helichrysum Essential Oil Contra Indications

Helichrysum Essential Oil is not known to produce toxic or irritating effects. However, individuals who are had recent surgery or who are at risk of internal haemorrhaging are not advised to use it.

As with all oils, a skin test is recommended to test for allergic reactions prior to use.

Pregnant women and nursing mothers are advised to consult a qualified medical professional before using this or any Essential Oils

Essential Oils are natural, contracted oils that have the fragrance of the plant from which they originated. Most typically, the oils are extracted from the plant through distillation. In many cases, the distillation process involves the use of steam.  As steam passes through the plant’s stems, seeds, flowers or leaves, it assists in vaporizing the volatile compounds.

While essential oils have various uses, they have a long documented history of medicinal value. Essential Oils can support overall health, act as a treatment or remedy for various medical or psychological conditions or help prevent infections and illness.

Essential Oils should not be used on animals as they can have adverse effects.
